Taking Initiative

My story for taking initiatives and expanding my network are short and simple because I am still waiting for return emails from the people I emailed to. So the first way I took initiative is through the way I am trying to submit my resume and my application for a Microsoft internship that I am hoping to apply for. So instead of only submitting it online, I wanted to contact someone who had done the internship in the past to ask them questions about how the internship would go and to see if I could get the contact information of some of the people who headed the project. Lucky for me I know plenty of people who have done Microsoft internships before who have made friends in the area that I was interested in. Unfortunately I have yet to get a response because I just thought of this idea just a day or two ago. The other thing that I did was get in contact with one of my old co-workers at an internship that I did a while back. I hadn't planned to use her as a reference in my resume however since she did know me quite well I thought that she would be an excellent reference.
Since I really don't have much in terms of initiative, I think the best way to follow up is to plan ahead for what I am going to do with my contacts. For the Microsoft thing, I think that I will try to see if I can develop a working relationship with the people who work on the stuff that I want to intern for. This way they would have a sense of who I am as a person, and if they like me and they want to to work on the internship, they could put in a good word so that I would have a better chance of getting the position that I want.

  1. Good luck with the internship!

I see that you are taking initiative for your career, and you seem to be on the right track. So, did any of them reply you?

One suggestion though. I don't know how you laid out for your email, but I think the lay out of your blog definitely has a room for improvement. If I were the one you contacted for your internship, I would appreciate an email with clear structure, cause I'm in a hurry.

  2. Ok... Three questions:
    1. How about changing the background and other visual setting a little bit?
Motivation: To make me feel more comfortable next time I see this blog.
    2. How about pay more attention to lay out your article?
Motivation: To help you get into a better habbit.
    3. Are you still sticking to the internship opportunity?
Motivation: Just to make sure you're still going after it.

  3. I see that you know quite a lot of Microsoft interns. That will surely propel you towards the career world in terms of networking.

    1. Are there any other people you contacted besides Microsoft interns? It seems like you have only tried to chat with people related to Microsoft.
    2. Can you explain what you wrote in the emails? I just want to know how you started off the email and what kind of questions / requests you had for them.

    3. What major are you and what benefits do you see in interning for Microsoft? Microsoft seems, to me, to be all about coding. I’m not sure if a mechanical engineer, for example, can find a place in Microsoft as an intern.

  4. Just letting you know, I would never write an email to anyone like that. I popped that out really fast because I didn't know what to write

  5. Question 1 : Did you know the person you were writing to well? --Only because it can become very awkward to resurrect old ties to get something out of them

Question 2 : Has the person replied yet? --only to see how far this got

Question 3 : How do you plan on getting in contact with the people at microsoft who are working on what you're intrested in interning with? --since that can be a rather large hurdle

I hope things end well for you.

  6. 1. How did you approach the internship other than submitting your resume? Did you talk to somebody who might read your resume? that way you might get a better understanding of what they are looking for.

2.In what way will you go about developing this working relationship? because its importnat to have a plan

3.What do you think you could give back to your contacts? Networking is a two way thing.
